A Guessing Game
I present to you my guesses on how I think the Huskers will perform week in and week out in the B1G and of course against the spread. A word of warning, I usually stink against the spread on NU games.
Predictions:
Huskers: 14
Gamecocks: 13
Line: Huskers +2.5

The Nebraska Cornhuskers will be facing their toughest challenge of the regular season this Saturday in Madison. It could probably be said for Wisconsin as well, but they do have road games at Michigan State and Ohio State to deal with too. The challenge is a tall one to say the least for the Big Red, but certainly a game they can win. It may require a little help from Wisconsin or at the very least the Huskers can’t shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers.
The road is a place that has not been kind to the Huskers here of late. Since Bo took the wheel, the best road wins would against Missouri 2 years ago and Oklahoma State last year. Those are nice feathers in the cap, but hardly making a real statement. They have been close to winning several big ones but have not been able to close them out. A win in Madison against this Wisconsin team would indeed be the cream of the crop. It will be loud and those Badger fans will be well oiled by the time the game kicks off. The national audience will bring an extra level of importance to the game especially in recruiting.
Here is what scares the daylights out of me, WWB, and that my friends is Wilson, White and Ball. White and Ball are most likely the best one two combo at RB in college football. The other W is Russell Wilson, who has been nothing short of spectacular this year. It appears he made a good decision in transferring to Wisconsin. He is hitting over 75% of his passes, has 11 TDs passing and another running to only 1 INT. You could hardly ask for anything more from a QB. The competition the Badgers have been facing is a total joke, but impressive stats nonetheless.
There is something that looks very appealing to me in the matchup and that is speed. The Huskers will certainly bring a lot more speed on both sides of the ball that Wisconsin is not use to seeing. We have a corvette going up against Wisconsin’s pickup truck. The Huskers learned the hard way that speed kills going up against those Florida State and Miami teams back in the day. TO started recruiting speed and we started winning National Championships. I just wish NU had a little more speed at the WR position to really test that Wisconsin DE.
This will be the most obvious statement to us Husker fans, but it must be said. Taylor Martinez has to take care of the ball and be able to complete a pass or two deep. If we must rely on Taylor sitting in the pocket and making good decisions, we will get pounded into the dirt. His feet are what makes Taylor special so strike some fear in them every time he throws it by rolling him out. If the first look isn’t there, take off brother. It was great to see Rex get the ball more last weekend. They need to spread the wealth a little more on the offensive side of the ball because there is more talent than we have had in the past.
As far as the Blackshirts go, they have not lived up to the preseason hype about how good they would be. To be fair, they have not been at full strength yet. Dennard finally got his first action of the season against Wyoming but it was sparingly and Crick missed last week’s game. They both should be ready to roll on Saturday and I still have faith that this defense can show some significant improvement from what we have seen so far this year. Perhaps I have my blinders on but they are better than this and what better time to show it than Saturday night under the lights.
Bill Belichick said stats are for losers, so this loser has some stats to share.
| NCAA Ranking | Wisconsin | Nebraska |
|---|---|---|
| Total Defense | 7 |
52 |
| Pass DE | 10 |
63 |
| Rush DE | 22 |
56 |
| Total Offense | 8 |
36 |
| Pass Off | 26 |
106 |
| Rush Off | 13 |

Now on paper or in this case on pixels, this game looks to be a blowout. The Badgers seem to have these Huskers over matched on both sides of the ball, but not so fast my friend. As Bill said, stats are for losers and since both teams have played against really bad defenses and mediocre offenses will throw all of those stats I worked so hard to get. Okay so it wasn’t that much time thanks to the World Wide Web, but there was some time spent.
Here is what NU needs to win the game: 1) Ameer Abdullah needs some great kick returns. 2) We cannot lose the turnover battle. 3) We have to get pressure on the quarterback, one way or another. I don’t think that is to much to ask for so I ask the genie to grant NU these 3 little wishes and it will bring us much happiness. Okay, Okay, winning the turnover battle is a big request but one that a genie should not have a problem granting, right?
Huskers: 23
Badgers: 38
Line: Huskers +9
Straight Up: 4-0
Against Spread: 1-2 (no line in first game)
We will barf the ball up to much to win.
